In the vast landscape of Vedic and Hindu literature, the terms Stotra, Mantra, and Hymn (often translated as Sūkta) represent different ways of interacting with the Divine. While they all use the power of sound, they differ in their origin, purpose, and the “rules” for their use.

The word Mantra comes from the roots man (“to think”) and tra (“to protect” or “to free”). A mantra is essentially a “tool for the mind.”

A Stotra is a hymn of praise. The word comes from the root stu, meaning “to praise” or “to laud.”

In a strict Hindu context, “Hymn” usually refers to a Sūkta (meaning “well-spoken”). These are the building blocks of the Four Vedas.
